The Newark plant, established in 1991, manufactures high-precision bearings for machine tools.
The plant has a history of over 100 years, including the period before it became part of the NSK Group, and the company has continually striven to address environmental issues by means such as installing the latest machinery.

Waste and Recycling Measures

The Newark plant is raising its recycling rate by ensuring thorough separation of waste materials and selecting responsible waste disposal companies.
The plant has also introduced a machine to compact plastic film waste. As a result, the recycling rate topped 90% in fiscal 2008. In 2009, we will work to separate waste even more efficiently, aiming for a recycling rate of over 94%.

Environmentally Harmful Substances

Aqueous Cleansing Devices

Aqueous Cleansing Devices

In fiscal 2008, the fluid used to clean bearing rings after the heat treatment process was switched from organic solvents to a water-soluble cleaning agent.
The previously-used organic solvents contained several Volatile Organic Compounds. Reducing the use of these compounds was essential to decreasing environmental impact and improving the work environment.
Finding a water-soluble cleansing agent that performs as effectively as organic solvents was a difficult task, but the change has not only contributed to the environment, but has also had the side benefit of reducing processing costs.

Global Warming Countermeasures

As part of its measures against global warming, the plant is working to reduce the amount of energy used at its facilities. This has included the introduction of air compressors fitted with inverters that operate proportional to energy usage, energy-efficient lighting, and a computerized control system for office air conditioning.
In fiscal 2008, an office energy-efficiency diagnosis was performed, and actions taken to minimize power consumption when buildings are empty on weekends and at night.
